The photograph taken by Jeff Wall reminded me immediately of the scene in The Grapes of Wrath when Tom is standing by the fence and about to sneak through after he's encountered an authority of the camp. The photograph has a sneaking quality to it, and even though it's a modern picture, it still related directly to Tom Joad for me. Any old looking picture of a map makes me think of The Grapes of Wrath, since the Joads had to navigate their way across the country, and Jasper Johns is an artist who makes a lot of maps. Though this picture is an American flag, they still seem to relate directly for me. The exploitation of the workers in California and along the journey showed a sense of competition between American and American, and as the flag always has a positive connotation, it's interesting to think about it in any other way, which The Grapes of Wrath shows.
